What You’ll Need to Renew your Virginia Driver License

  • Social Security Number
  • Date of birth
  • Current driver's license
  • $32 for Class D driver’s license renewal fee
  • $10 fee if you'll upgrade the license to REAL ID
  • Vision Test (if applicable)

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Virginia Driver License Online

  1. Go to Virginia DMV license renewal website.
  2. Type in your Social Security Number and date of birth.
  3. Pay the fee as the system shown.
  4. Receive your renewed Class D driver’s license via U.S. mail.

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Virginia Driver License in Person

  1. Visit your nearest DMV office in person. Consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge.
  2. Submit the required documents and surrender your license.
  3. Pay the fees.
  4. Receive a receipt for your renewed driver’s license.
  5. Receive your renewed Class D driver’s license via U.S. mail

What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Virginia Driver License by Mail

  1. Review your pre-printed driver's license renewal application that you received in the mail. If your address, height or weight is incorrect on the application, you can still renew by mail. Additionally, you can change your organ donor status. If any other information is incorrect, call DMV at (804) 497-7100. Speak with a DMV customer service agent and explain the incorrect information.
  2. Complete all questions on the application.
  3. Sign and date the application.
  4. Return the application with your payment in the enclosed envelope to:

Here are Virginia driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • You may renew your driver's license every other renewal cycle by mail unless your license is expired, suspended, revoked, or you hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • You will need to visit the DMV in person if your last driver’s license renewal was not completed in person or your driver’s license has expired.
  • License expired more than a year ago?  Then you will need to apply for a new driver’s license.
