What You’ll Need to Do to Renew your Alaska Driver License Online

  1. Go to the Alaska DMV license renewal website.

  4. Pay the license renewal fee.
  5. You'll receive a temporary copy of your renewed driver's license via email.
  6. You'll receive your driver's license via mail in two weeks.

Here are Alaska driver's license renewal exceptions to note:

  • If you are less than 18, please see about either your instruction permit or your provision license.
  • If you are turning 21, your license will expire 90 days after your birthday and you will need to renew your license AFTER your 21st birthday.
  • Your new license will switch to a horizontal format instead of vertical and will no longer have age related restrictions. To obtain the new license you must take an alcohol awareness test at your local DMV office.
  • If out of state and not eligible to renew your license online you can apply for a license extension letter online.
  • A commercial driver license cannot be extended more than 30 days beyond the license expiring and no extension is available for licenses expired over 1 year.
