Here's what you'll need to get your Vermont license:

Documents verifying the following:

  1. Your identity and Date of Birth
  2. Your Social Security Information
  3. Your Vermont Residency and Current Address
  4. Your Lawful Status in the United States (Only required for Real ID & EDL)

NOTE:

  • If applying for an Enhanced License (EDL) Proof of US Citizenship is required.
  • Proof of Lawful Status must have a minimum of 30 days remaining.

Here's what you'll need to do to get your Vermont license:

  1. Read the Vermont Driver Manual and take written practice tests online
  2. Apply for your Learner’s Permit: submit the required documents, application form and ID at the DMV; consider making a DMV appointment or getting a line waiting concierge
  3. At the DMV, submit the application for a driver's license, pay the fees, pass the written test, and receive your Learner’s Permit.

Here are Vermont driver's license exceptions to note:

  • A license cannot be issued to a person when the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles has evidence that such person either cannot or will not operate a motor vehicle without endangering the other users of the highway.
  • A person who is not a Vermont Resident.
  • A person whose privilege to operate a motor vehicle in any state has been suspended, revoked, or refused cannot be issued a license until such suspension, revocation or refusal has been terminated and the person has been officially notified in writing of reinstatement.
  • New applicants and customers making changes to name, date of birth, place of birth, or SSN must present the required documents from each of these four categories. Not required for renewals with no changes to name, DOB, POB, or SSN.
